How to use FTP to transfer files

How to use FTP to transfer files

This picture tutorial will show you how to use Internet Explorer and FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload your files from your computer to your web hosting account.

Requirements: Most web browsers will allow you to FTP, but this tutorial is using Internet Explorer 6.0.

Step 1:

  1. Open your web browser and enter your FTP address (provided by your web host) into the address bar.
  2. Click "Go".

Step 2:

You will be presented with a login page. Enter your user name and password.

If you are not presented with the login screen, but you get an access denied error, then try clicking "File | Login As", so that the login box will display.

Step 3:

After you login, you can see the files and folders in your FTP location, at the remote server. From this point forward you can copy and paste files from your computer to your remote location, just as if you were copying them to another folder on your own computer. You can also do the reverse and copy files from the remote server to your own computer.

Important:

Aquest Hosting customers are given an FTP address which goes to your account root. Once you connect to that address, you will see a folder named for your domain. For example, if your domain name is "abc.com", then you will see a folder called "abccom" (there's no period in the folder name). That folder is your website folder (aka: website root folder). Accounts with multiple websites will have several of these folders named for their domains.

Double-click the domain folder to open it.

In your domain folder, you will see several default folders, and a temporary default web page (default.htm) we placed there. This is where you will upload your website.

Just to clarify, your website files must sit inside the folder that has your domain name.

Other ways to connect to FTP:

There are many ways to connect to an FTP site, including many software applications. Our preferred method is to use a web browser because we find it to be simpler than using special applications for connecting. You can certainly use FTP software if you prefer. The application provider should provide you with instructions about how to use their software to connect, but if you have any issues, please submit a Trouble Ticket from your control panel and we will try to assist you.
